Drug & Alcohol Abuse

The evidence suggests that a large number of crimes, especially those of violence, are committed by offenders under the influence of either drugs or alcohol. Further the need for drugs can fuel acquisitive crimes such as theft and burglary.

Our Aim

To reduce the availability of Class A drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, by interrupting their supply; to reduce the demand for illegal drugs by providing effective forms of treatment; and to reduce alcohol related crime and disorder.

Problem Areas

Northwich Witton, Winsford Dene, and Winsford Wharton.

Our objectives

  • Implement the Drug and Alcohol Action Team Annual Plan each year, which will have specific and measurable targets so that we can track progress.
  • Develop existing, and implement a range of, new initiatives to target the people who supply illegal drugs, particularly heroin and cocaine.
  • Develop existing, and implement new, initiatives to reduce the demand for illegal drugs by improving access to, and the quality of, treatment options for drug mis-users, including young people.
  • To reduce the use of Class A drugs and the frequent use of any illicit drug among all young people under he age of 25, especially the most vulnerable.
  • Assess the local situation to identify and understand the range and extent of alcohol related crime and disorder and develop a locally based strategy to tackle the problem and achieve measurable results.

What we have done

  • Established and maintained integrated drugs & alcohol treatment facility in Northwich in conjunction with Turning Point
  • Developed supported housing capabilities for high-risk persistent and priority offenders (PPOs)
  • Implemented Designated Public Place Orders (DPPO) in appropriate locations in the Borough as part of a co-ordinated approach to the reduction of alcohol related crime and disorder.
  • In conjunction with Vale Royal Local Strategic Partnership developed preventative interventions to warn young people of the hazards of drug & alcohol abuse.

Whats next

  • Establish needle exchange at Vale Royal day services
  • Implement DPPO notice procedures
  • Measure the impact of drugs on the public's perceptions of crime and disorder
  • Further develop linkages with Children & Young People Partnership regarding preventative work and Youth Offending Team schemes.
