Problem-solving PC Takes to the Road

ALMOST 200 drivers have received warnings about their driving after a CAT officer hit the road upon hearing residents’ concerns about speeding.

Northwich officer PC Steve Jones targeted Chesterway with a speed recording device after locals expressed concern about motorists travelling too fast along the 30mph-limit road.

Results from a speed monitoring exercise conducted over a three hour period showed that  196 vehicles were captured travelling over the limit.

PC Jones said: “The majority of people travelling too fast were local drivers. It could well be that people think the limit is 40mph and on this occasion, they have been lucky because the action being taken won’t hit them in the pocket.

“I’ve issued police warning letters to all those found breaking the limit so they are now fully aware of the restrictions. If they are caught breaking the limit again, enforcement action will be taken.”

The Northwich Police Station-based officer used a Speed Indicator Display to monitor the speeds of vehicles on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The trailer flashes up the speed of vehicles as they pass.

Findings during a one-hour recording period on a Saturday showed that 63 cars broke the limit. The average speed of those breaking the limit was 37mph and the highest was 48mph.

The following day, a two-hour recording session took place. The average speed was 41mph, the highest was 58mph.

“From the way drivers slowed down to around 36 mph as opposed to below 30, I definitely think the speeding problem is being caused by people who think the limit is 40 mph.

“Hopefully, this piece of work will contribute to raising awareness of the limit on Chesterway and encourage drivers to slow down. I’d like to thank the local residents for bringing this issue to my attention and I’d like to reassure them that I will keep my eye on the situation and take further action if needed,” said the PC.
