Hook and Cane Burglaries

The 2001 British Crime Survey indicates that crime in general is on the decrease. However in certain circumstances offences will prompt a specific response from the Police in partnership with other agencies.

Recently a series of burglaries have taken place in Cheshire. Offenders have entered houses during the night by placing a cane through the letterbox and by hooking car keys / house keys they have then stolen vehicles.

In the past 6 months some 20 offences have taken place where offenders have specifically targeted this area of Cheshire. Offenders select houses that usually have an open plan hallway and stairs that are clearly accessible and visible via the letterbox. By pushing the cane through the letterbox they have hooked keys left on display in the hallway and have then stolen the occupants vehicles which were left secured on their driveways.

A simple method to prevent this occurring is to not leave keys of any sort on display in proximity to letterboxes and windows, and if you have a garage please use it to keep your vehicle safe
